Although no integrated solution for Lao similar to Lao Script for Windows is yet
available for the Mac, it is possible use Lao in many Mac applications
to send or receive emails, create documents and view Lao text on
websites if suitable Lao (Unicode) fonts and a Lao keyboard are
installed.
A new font, Saysettha MX, has been specially developed and optimized for use
on OS X. For details and sample text, see
Saysettha MX Font Description.
A disk image with a Lao keyboard and the Saysettha MX font is now
available for download from
LaoScriptOnMac.
See Installing Lao keyboard and fonts on Mac OS X
for more information.
Using Lao Unicode fonts in applications.- To enable Lao editing in applications, select the Lao font,
and select the LaoSTEA keyboard using the flag in the menu bar.
- Hidden break characters may be inserted manually between words or
syllables as required by pressing Shift Space.
- Saysettha MX has been tested with TextEdit, Mail, Pages
and Safari. Safari (and many other
applications) will automatically recognize an installed Lao Unicode font
and use it for displaying any Unicode-coded Lao text.
- Most available Lao Unicode fonts have been designed for use with Windows
applications and do not always work correctly with Mac applications.
Saysettha MX has been developed specially for Mac use, but
Saysettha Unicode and many other Unicode fonts can be used with
some minor display limitations. Saysettha OT and other Lao
OpenType fonts that have been designed to be used with Microsoft's
Unicode Script Processor (Uniscribe) may not
be displayed quite correctly in Mac applications.
Another solution for using Lao on Mac computers is available from
XenoType Technologies. But please note that Lao Script for Windows have not tested
this product and cannot endorse it or respond to any questions about it.
